FREEDOM OF WORSHIP IN GREECE

Da un po' di tempo circola, anche in Italia, la promozione di un'associazione che si propone di de-criminalizzare il culto degli antichi greci, affermando che questo sia ancora reato. Di tanto in tanto l'appello di questa associazione si fa sentire.

La Federazione Pagana, che ha preso parte al congresso WCER 2004 ad Atene, si è data da fare per smentire la voce: il congresso è stato infatti chiuso con un rito tenutosi in un sito archeologico protetto, il che da solo smentisce l'assenza di libertà religiosa in Grecia. La voce però è tornata a farsi sentire a fine marzo, in occasione di una notizia diffusa da Ansamed:

From some time, even in Italy is spreading the word of a movement promoting the de-criminalization of the worship of ancient hellenic gods and saying it is still a crime in Greece. From time to time this movement's appeal makes itself heard.

The Federazione Pagana, which took part to WCER congress in 2004 in Athens, worked to disprove this rumour: the congress ended with a rite in an archeological site, which is protected, and this should deny the lack of religious freedom in Greece. But the rumour showed up again at the end of March, with a news spread by Ansamed:

(ANSAmed) - ATENE, 24 MAR - Grazie ad una sentenza emessa da un tribunale ateniese di primo grado, da oggi è perfettamente legale, per chi volesse, venerare le 12 divinità dell'antico Olimpo greco. Lo riferisce oggi il quotidiano Kathimerini precisando che con tale sentenza i giudici hanno dato il loro parere favorevole alla costituzione di un'associazione i cui appartenenti ammettono di venerare Zeus (Giove per gli antichi romani) e gli altri 11 tra dee e dei che, secondo la mitologia, risiedevano sul monte Olimpo. “Personalmente io sono a favore del diritto di ognuno a praticare la propria fede, qualunque essa possa essere e senza alcun ostacolo”, ha dichiarato al quotidiano Apostolos Vrachiolidis, un giornalista che e' tra i membri fondatori dell'associazione i cui appartenenti respingono recisamente qualsiasi accusa di praticare l'idolatria. “Vogliamo essere semplicemente liberi di venerare le divinità dei nostri antenati”, ha detto un altro membro del gruppo che ha preferito restare anonimo. In a ruling made public yesterday, the court allowed the formation of an association whose members claim to worship Zeus and the other 11 gods, Kathimerini reports. "I support everybody's right to practice their faith, whichever it may be, without hindrance," said Apostolos Vrachiolidis, a journalist and one of the founding members of the association. Members of the group deny that they engage in idolatry. "We simply want to worship the gods of our ancestors freely," a member who preferred to remain anonymous told Kathimerini. (ANSAmed)
`La notizia è stata diffusa rapidamente da molti siti, mailing list e gruppi pagani di tutta Europa, tutti felici per la bella notizia. Alla fine è arrivata sul forum del WCER, dove Vlassis Rassias, membro dell'organizzazione greca YSEE (Concilio Supremo degli Ellenici Gentili), che fa parte del WCER ha così commentato, svelando anche alcuni interessanti retroscena:`	The news has been spread quickly by many pagan websites, mailing lists and groups all over the Europe and all very happy for the good news. At the end it arrived on WCER forum, where Vlassis Rassias, member of the greek organization YSEE (Supreme Council of Ethnikoi Hellenes), which is part of WCER, so answeres, disveiling also some interesting backstages:
"Troppo bello per essere vero e naturalmente NON lo è. La notizia, scritta da un giornalista della chiesa, è INESATTA e FUORVIANTE. Qualche settimana prima di un preannunciato appello dell'YSEE al governo greco, un certo numero di persone, comprese alcune che in un passato recente hanno agito in maniera ostile nei confronti dell'YSEE (uno si è spinto al punto di partecipare allo spargimento della voce, controllato dalla TV della chiesa, che si supponeva che l'YSEE e il WCER sono... organizzazioni sataniste, appena prima della conferenza del WCER ad Atene nel 2004!!!), hanno formato una tipica associazione culturale "i cui membri rivendicano di poter adorare Zeus" (sic) e ovviamente hanno ottenuto la necessaria legalizzazione prima di essere pubbliche, come tutte le associazioni culturali in Grecia devono fare. La libertà di culto è già garantita dallo stato Greco con l'articolo 18 della legge 2462/1997 e da allora nessun tribunale può negare l'approvazione alle associazioni che sono o dicono di essere religiose. Una cosa già nota a noi "nuovi" alla "battaglia", sfonda una porta aperta. La libertà DI PRATICA è garantita in Grecia, NON è questo il problema (il problema è di essere accettati dalle Autorità Greche come una VALIDA entità rappresentativa di un certo numero di cittadini greci). Per quanto riguarda solo la libertà di PRATICA, YSEE ha celebrato più volte IN siti "archeologici" con permesso scritto da parte delle autorità (a Sounion - come si ricorderanno i membri del WCER - a Delfi, ad Ampiareo etc) e la scorsa domenica [n.d.t. 26 marzo 2006] ha celebrato ancora UN ULTERIORE festival APERTO e PUBBLICO sul sito del tempio al dio Asclepio a Gortys Arcadia, dove hanno presenziato circa 130 nostri membri (le foto del rituale appaiono nella pagina dell'YSEE). `L'YSEE ha già rilasciato un comunicato stampa sul caso, dopo aver ricevuto molte chiamate da giornalisti greci e stranieri interessati. A few weeks before a pre-announced YSEE's appeal to the Greek Government, a number of people, including some that acted hostile to YSEE in the recent past (one reached so far as to participate in the controlled by the Church TV rumor spreading that supposedly YSEE and WCER were... satanists, just before the 2004 WCER Conference in Athens !!!!), formed a typical cultural association "whose members claim to worship Zeus" (sic) and of course got the needed legalization before they go public, just as all the cultural associations in Greece have to do. The open worship is already granted by the Greek State in article 18 of 2462/1997 law and since then no Court can deny approval to associations that are or claim to be religious. The well known to us “newcomers” in the "battle", actually break in open doors. The freedom OF PRACTICE is guaranteed in Greece, this is NOT the problem (the problem is to be accepted by the Greek Authorities as a VALID entity representative of a number of Greek citizens). Concerning only the freedom of PRACTICE, YSEE has celebrated many times INSIDE “archaeological” sites with written permission by the authorities (at Sounion –as the WCER people can remember-, at Delphi, at Ampiaraeion etc) and last Saturday celebrated again ONE MORE OPEN AND PUBLIC festival in the site of God Asclepius' Temple in Gortys Arcadia, where about 130 members of ours attended (the photos of the ritual appear in YSEE's webpage). P.S. YSEE has already issued a press release on the case, after it received many calls from interested Greek and foreign journalists.
